1 October 2001 - SECPay goes live with CV2/AVS
When an acquiring bank authorises a card for CNP payment, only limited checks are done:
- this card has not been reported lost or stolen.
- we believe there are sufficient funds available for this transaction to take place.
AVS and CVV2 are in addition to these and are performed by the issuing bank at the same time.
Barclaycard Merchant Services and Bank of Scotland customers only, CVV2 is global. All other acquiring banks AVS and CVV2 is only provided for cards issued in the UK.
For AVS and CVV2 the billing address must be supplied to us with the additional last 3 digits etched onto the back of the card.
AVS checks up to 5 numbers on the billing address, and up to 5 numbers of the post code supplied by the customer.
CVV2 checks the 3 numbers that are etched onto the back of the card
These give a greater probability that this is a cardholder present transaction i.e. the purchaser has the card in their hand
There are 5 possible replies from the card issuer:
All Match
Security code (CVV2) match only
Address (AVS) match only
No data matches
Data not checked
To implement please see the Card number acceptance template in the SECPay API document http://www.secpay.com/sc_api.html#other and add to your custom template if you have one.
This basic fraud detection service is free and is supplied as a standard APACS risk assessment, and appears on the notification order email you receive from SECPay as well as within the transaction viewer.
